Our Beliefs
Discrimination
  • We support enacting laws that protect gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender (GLBT) persons from discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and services. We believe in the separation of church and state, allowing churches First Amendment rights to make choices in hiring, and to whom they offer their religious and sacramental services. We do not support requiring churches to marry same-sex couples.
  • We are for equal rights regardless of sexual orientation, not special rights for GLBT individuals or families.
  • We are opposed to public sex. We feel that if any two individuals have sex, it should be conducted in the privacy of their own home or in a private space. The penalty for public sex should be the same for heterosexuals and gay persons, and the same regardless of what type of public sex occurs, whether it be a misdemeanor or a felony.
Families
  • We support the institution of the family and seek to increase its stability and vitality as a foundation of our communities for all people.
  • We support the establishment of stable marriages and families in which partners and children can thrive. We recognize the trend in society in which long-term commitment to marriage vows has declined (50% divorce rates among legally married couples). We desire to make a positive contribution toward reversing this trend by building and legally recognizing committed and stable same-sex marriages. We affirm that successfully stable families take many forms. Regardless of sexual orientation, we affirm the rights by which two partners are joined in life-long relationships of commitment, mutuality, faithfulness and generativity.
  • We support the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender individuals to adopt children as single parents or as couples, as the current law allows heterosexual singles and couples to adopt. There are so many children in the world that need a stable and loving parent or parents to raise them regardless of their sexuality.
Same-Sex Marriage
  • We support issuing Virginia Marriage Licenses to same-sex couples and see this as a way to add to the stability and vitality of the institution of marriage in the Commonwealth of Virginia and this nation.
  • Marriage is a civil contract at which churches are often, but not always, asked to preside and provide blessing. As current law stands, no church is required to preside over and bless the marriage of all who ask. In keeping with Constitutional separation of Church and State, extending equal civil marriage rights to same-sex couples will in no way require that any church be required to marry same-sex couples.
  • In lieu of civil marriage rights in the Commonwealth being extended to same-sex couples, we feel that civil unions, domestic partnerships, or other state-recognized arrangements would provide some of the benefits of marriage. We likewise support these arrangements.
Education
  • We support educating the general public about the gay community, our lives and our relationships, as a way of building better understanding and mutual respect.
  • We oppose teaching elementary school children about sex or homosexuality except to inform students that some children have two mothers or two fathers that care for and love them. We support public sex education classes where teenagers are informed that some people of the same-sex have sexual relations. This has been taught in sex education classes for decades. We do not believe in showing graphic pictures of people having gay sex in order for students to learn about gays since the majority of the public is heterosexual.
  • We support the establishment of Gay-Straight Alliances in Greater Prince William high schools, which allows gay and lesbian teenagers who are struggling with their sexuality to form a group with non-gay teenage students to discuss their feelings. We feel this can only foster a better understanding of our greater community. For more information on Gay-Straight Alliances, we have found that GLSEN/ACLU's Q&A is a beneficial source.
  • We support teaching ethical behavior to all students in Virginia public schools.
Non-Partisan Politics
  • We endeavor to foster a better understanding of GLBT issues with our elected leaders.
  • We support the election of fair-minded representatives in Prince William County, Manassas City and Manassas Park City, regardless of political affiliation.
